Overview of Trade License in India & Delhi

A trade licence is a certification or document that enables a business to conduct its operations in the specific municipal limit for which it is issued. In Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) issues trade licences to businesses in order to control various commercial operations at the local level.

The trade licence is granted under the guidelines set forth under the Shop and Establishment Act, upon which  within 30 days after the start of work, every establishment/shop must compulsorily register under the Act.

Every business that fits into one of the following categories must obtain a trade licence:

  • A place of business or service where the majority of the employees or clients are engaged in official work.
  • A hotel or restaurant, a cafe, or any other type of snack facility.
  • A multiplex, a movie theatre, or any other public entertainment venue.

To make sure that a person is not engaging in unethical business operations and is adhering to the pertinent rules, safety precautions, and standards, the government has made it obligatory for one to obtain a trade licence. The owners of a licenced firm are shielded from some sorts of liabilities. Personal funds would not be at risk in any compensation if damage or injury resulted from corporate acts or doings.
